Zen Flower

An artwork created by an Islamic woman who has been practicing Zazen for many years. I met this lady when I was studying and practicing Zazen at a Zen monastery in Japan. For Islamic person, it is prohibited to practicing any other religious activities, yet her family disagreed with her practicing. In my opinion, her conduct of being at the monastery was not show disobedience to her family or her religion. From another point of view, she has taught me that she has freedom to respect herself and her choice. She believes that all religions have the same goal. Personally, I was really impressive to her positive effect of her choices and attitudes that she has upon lives and this world. Her view has shown freedom of thought which has crossed over the religious and social boundaries she is. She practiced Zen and still believes that she is a strict Muslim. I believe she is “Beyond Belief” means that she understands the freedom she can choose for herself, which I regard as a high level of consciousness. She allowed me to use her name for publication without fear but I am very concerned about her safety and it would be better to conceal her identity for security purposes.

The work exhibited here is another painting which she painted her smiling portrait with a blooming flower at front. When I asked her about the meaning of this picture, she told me the story of the beginning of Zen religion; Buddha after enlightened, gathered to give a speech. And many people came to listen to him. So they asked him what the truth of living is. Then Buddha took the flower and showed it. No one could understand the meaning, thousand of people were waiting for him to speak a word, but he was very quiet. Only one of his disciples Makakasho (Mahākāśyapa) stood up and smiled, and Buddha replied him with smile, then the Buddha gave the flower to him. They understood each other by mindfulness transmission. Makakasho was known as the first leading of Zen in the line of transmission. This picture is representing the transmission of Dharma to her.

ดอกไม้แห่งเซน

ผมพบหญิงชาวอิสลามคนหนึ่ง ผู้ศึกษาเซนและปฏิบัติซาเซนเป็นระยะเวลานานหลายปีขณะที่ผมได้ไปทดลองศึกษาและปฏิบัติเซนที่วัดเซนในประเทศญี่ปุ่น ตามธรรมเนียมปฏิบัติของผู้ที่นับถือศาสนาอิสลามไม่สามารถปฏิบัติตามแนวทางของศาสนาอื่นได้ ทั้งนี้ทางครอบครัวของเธอก็ไม่เห็นด้วยที่เธอมาปฏิบัติที่วัดเซน แต่การกระทำของเธอมิได้เป็นการพยายามขัดขืนหรือท้าทายบทบัญญัติทางศาสนา หากแต่เป็นการแสดงออกถึงเสรีภาพและความเคารพในคุณค่าของความเป็นมนุษย์ในตน ซึ่งเธอเชื่อว่าโดยท้ายที่สุดแล้วทุกศาสนาต่างมีจุดมุ่งหมายเดียวกัน โดยส่วนตัวแล้ว ผมประทับใจต่อวิถีชีวิตและทัศนคติของเธอที่มีต่อชีวิตและโลก ซึ่งสื่อให้เห็นได้ถึงเสรีภาพในการแสดงออกและก้าวข้ามขีดจำกัดของศาสนาและกฎเกณฑ์ทางสังคมวัฒนธรรมที่ตนเองสังกัดอยู่ อีกทั้งแนวทางการดำเนินชีวิตของเธอเองที่แม้จะปฏิบัติเซน แต่ตัวของเธอเองยืนยันว่าเธอยังเป็นมุสลิมและปฏิบัติตนตามแนวทางของมุสลิมที่เคร่งครัด ซึ่งผมคิดว่าการดำเนินชีวิตของเธออาจเรียกได้อยู่ในภาวะที่เหนือความเชื่อ (Beyond Believe) คือการก้าวข้ามข้อจำกัดทางสังคมต่างๆ รวมทั้งการมีเสรีภาพในความเป็นมนุษย์สูง ทั้งนี้เธอได้อนุญาตให้ผมใช้ชื่อจริงของเธอในการเผยแพร่ โดยส่วนตัวแล้วผมรู้สึกว่า ตัวเธอเองปราศจากความกลัวว่าจะได้รับอันตรายใดๆ แต่กลับเป็นตัวผมเองที่เป็นห่วง หากการเผยแพร่ชื่อและข้อมูลที่แท้จริงของเธอจะทำให้เธอได้รับอันตราย ถึงแม้เธอจะมีเจตนาดีก็ตาม

แต่ผลงานที่นำมาแสดงในที่นี้เป็นผลงานอีกชิ้นหนึ่งที่เธอเขียนรูปเหมือนตัวเธอกำลังยิ้มและมีดอกไม้ ผมถามว่ารูปนี้หมายความว่าอะไร เธอเล่าว่า เมื่อตอนที่พระพุทธเจ้าตรัสรู้ใหม่ๆ มีคนจากทุกสารทิศเข้ามาขอให้พระพุทธเจ้าแสดงพระธรรมเทศนา พระองค์ทรงแสดงธรรมโดยการชูดอกไม้ขึ้นท่ามกลางที่ประชุม ผู้ที่อยู่ในที่นั้นต่างไม่เข้าใจในความหมาย มีเพียงพระมหากัสสปะเท่านั้นที่ยิ้มรับ พระองค์จึงยื่นดอกไม้ให้พระมหากัสสปะ ซึ่งพระมหากัสสปะถือได้ว่าเป็นผู้สืบทอดธรรมะตามแนวทางของพระพุทธศาสนานิกายเซน (พระสังฆปรินายกองค์ที่ 1) และนี่ถือเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการสอนแบบเซน ใจสู่ใจปราศจากถ้อยคำ ซึ่งรูปที่เธอเขียนได้สื่อแทนถึงการรับธรรมะเข้าสู่ตัวเธอ

“Zen flower”. The story starts from the transmision of TRUTH, from mind to mind, not through the words or language.Buddha after enlightment, gathered to give a speach. And many people came to listen for him. So they asked him what is the truth of living. And Buddha, took the flower and showed it. No one could understand the meaning, thousand of people were waiting him to speak, but he was very quite. Only one of his disciples Makakasho standed up and smiled, and Buddha replied him with smile. They understood each other by mindfull transmission. Life is just like a Flower, if you can see it, you can see your life. Just listen what it says to you, listen carefully. It speaks in silent, just listen.

Now, is the Ramadan, the fasting time in whole muslim world. No eating, no drinking, no having sexual intercourse, no lying and no harming the human. These 5 main precepts that we must observe during one month and after the sunset we are allowed to drink and to eat. Everyone is having purification of mind and body and giving prayings to the God.

But the reason that all muslims, wants to be pure in this month is because our Prophet Muhammed, that I draw on the picture, had his first vision of Angel and God and transmission of Kuran, the Holy book on these days. He went to the mountains and lived there in meditation for 3 years and on the day of month Ramadan he received the revelations from God. This is how starts Islam.

But in Islam, we are not allowed to draw the picture of Muhammed, because, it is prohibited. But I drawed this picture, from my heart, I needed to draw him and on these month, I receive the letter from you, that makes me to be so surprised, when you ask me speak about that picture. I am really happy for that. You gave me a big relief. Thank you!!!
