Originally from Phuket, my grandmother married my grandfather (a non-corrupted police officer) when she was around 19, my grandfather was probably in his 30s or 40s. She was a simple local girl and my grandfather’s family never accepted her. During that time, government officers were highly respected, however since my grandfather wasn’t corrupted, there wasn’t enough money to feed 5 kids and themselves, so my grandmother had to work meager jobs like folding bags and selling food, an act that completely tarnished the ‘image’ of government officers during that time. Not only was there not enough money for the family, my grandfather also became an alcoholic after being introduced to alcohol in the battle of the south. Therefore there was violence in the house and not enough money to be paid for the children’s education. My grandmother then had to earn money some way behind my grandfather’s back, which was by borrowing money from businessmen. In the end, she wasn’t able to pay back the loans and almost ended up killing herself with my grandfather’s pistol. This was when the children understood how poor they were and thus became very independent and hardworking.

Once my grandmother reached the age of retirement (around 20 years ago), and when everyone believed that she was able to rest from all her hard work, an accident occurred–a blood vessel in her brain burst due to her accumulated stress. With the technology being very limited during those times, she became mentally and physically disabled. However, even with these disabilities, she is one of the happiest people I’ve ever know–she always laughed at every opportunity and still tried her hardest to take care of her children and grandchildren.

Currently, my grandmother is bedridden from a recent broken leg, yet she still appreciates and laughs at the small things in life. She has gone through so much pain and suffering but has kept herself optimistic and strength.

ช่วงที่ยายก้าวเข้าสู่วัยเกษียน (ประมาณ 20 ปีที่แล้ว) ตอนที่ทุกคนเชื่อว่ายายจะได้พักจากการทำงานหนักทั้งปวง ก็เกิดอุบัติเหตุขึ้น เส้นเลือดสมองของยายแตกเนื่องจากความเครียดสะสม และเพราะข้อจำกัดทางเทคโนโลยีการแพทย์ในสมัยนั้น เธอจึงพิการด้านจิตและร่างกาย แต่แม้ว่ายายจะมีข้อจำกัดเหล่านี้ ยายก็ยังคงเป็นคนที่มีความสุขมากที่สุดที่ฉันรู้จัก ยายจะหัวเราะเสมอ และพยายามดูแลลูก ๆ และหลานๆอย่างไม่ลดละ

ทุกวันนี้ ยายนอนป่วยอยู่ในเตียงหลังจากขาหักเมื่อไม่นานมานี้ แต่ยายก็ยังเห็นคุณค่าและหัวเราะกับสิ่งเล็ก ๆ น้อย ๆ ในชีวิต ยายได้ผ่านความลำบากและความทุกข์มามาก แต่ได้รักษาการมองโลกในแง่ดีและความเข้มแข็งไว้ได้เสมอมา
