Shall We Dance

Twenty years ago I first met Rirkrit in New York while he was performing his art, which is a part of “Art Against Aids” exhibition. The work “Shall We Dance”, the original soundtrack of “The King and I” (1956) from a scene that the King dances with Anna, Rirkrit invited the audience to dance along with him. In those day people were afraid of HIV. Knowledge about protection and treating the patients was very limited, yet the artist invited people to dance and touch each other’s bodies. I think this is an artwork that shows love and respect in an individual which creates the spiritual bonding, destroying the walls of worry and fear among humans. Beside this, the work can also interpret as a symbol of a destruction of the class differences between people in our society.

เมื่อประมาณยี่สิบปี่ที่แล้ว ผมพบพี่ฤกษ์ฤทธิ์ครั้งแรกที่นิวยอร์ก ขณะนั้นเขากำลังแสดง Performing Art ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของนิทรรศการ Art Against Aids ในผลงานที่ชื่อว่า “Shall We Dance” ด้วยการเปิดแผ่นเสียงเพลงประกอบภาพยนตร์ชื่อ Shall We Dance จากภาพยนตร์เรื่อง The King and I (พ.ศ.2499) ในตอนที่กษัตริย์เต้นรำกับแอนนา โดยตัวศิลปินเองเชิญผู้ชมที่เดินผ่านไปมาในขณะนั้นร่วมเต้นรำไปกับเขา สถานการณ์ทั่วโลกในระยะยี่สิบปีที่แล้วต่างตระหนกกับเชื้อ HIV ความรู้เกี่ยวกับการป้องกันและรักษาผู้ป่วยที่ได้รับเชื้อยังมีน้อย แต่ตัวศิลปินกลับเชื้อเชิญผู้คนแปลกหน้าให้มาสัมผัสตัวและเต้นรำร่วมกัน ซึ่งผมคิดว่างานชิ้นนี้เป็นการแสดงออกถึงความรัก และความเคารพในความเป็นมนุษย์ของเราแต่ละคน เป็นการเชื่อมต่อพื้นที่ทางจิตวิญาณ ทำลายกำแพงความหวาดระแวง ความกลัวที่มนุษย์มีต่อมนุษย์ด้วยกัน และงานชิ้นนี้ยังสามารถตีความได้ถึงการทำลายสถานะความเหลื่อมล้ำทางชนชั้นของคนในสังคมปัจจุบันได้อีกด้วย
