010 : A statue of Ukon

024-----

Kinue Kamitsuma

This is a statue of Ukon placed in a Tokonoma (alcove) in Ukonan. Since he stuck to his belief as a Christian throughout his life, he was ordered the banishment by Ieyasu. Over about one month, he took passage in deadly heavy storm by ship of Ayusta, and reached Manila. In this statue, he appears without his topknot and putting of wet Kimono by seawater. He looks praying, looking at death, with tea ceremony bowl in his hands. With Mr.Nakano who made this statue I think of his life and thoughts, and give my sincere heart to this.
